Third Announcement and Call for Papers

The recent financial global crisis has accelerated the need for a sustainable economic growth where smarter and greener economy could create prosperity and new job from innovation and from using the natural resources better than before. In this global context, besides the role of the policy makers, companies cannot postpone anymore the implementation of strategies to deal with an increasing competition in a sustainable, green and environmental-conscious and social-oriented market: strict regulations, consumers demand for greener products, reduction of the carbon footprint, optimization of the usage of natural resources, more societal attention and many other trends are increasing the challenges to compete in a real global market. Companies are therefore called to become more efficient, increase their productivity, use less resources and non-renewable energy in an environment with high energy prices, carbon constraints and greater resource competition.

These challenges require a deep rethinking of the role of Manufacturing with the need for new approaches to Product, Service and Production Management: from a cost-cutting to a multi-disciplinary knowledge-based eco-factory model. With this goal in mind, APMS2010 calls for new, innovative and original scientific contributions which address practical and industrial-oriented solutions where the above context is addressed.

Rhys Jones - Abstract excerpt:
Understanding short crack growth in 7050-T7451
To put this in context 7950 is now the primary aerosapce aluminium alloy used in Defence and Aerospace applications. It is the primary alloy used in the F/A-18, the Super Hornet and the Joint Strike Fighter. This paper will present the results of a detailed experimental and analytical study into the growth of near micron size flaws and will relate the implication of these findings to fleet management.

Michael Pecht - Abstract excerpt:
Information Systems Safety and Availability – A New Time-Bomb
Information systems have started to control everything from buildings to cars to our basic energy and economic infrastructure. While the complexity of these systems has increased, there have been increasingly more problems with the availability and safety of these systems. This presentation will address the challenges facing the world and possible solutions.

Margot Weijnen - Abstract excerpt:
Whole Life Asset Management in interconnected infrastructure systems
Infrastructures become increasingly interconnected. For example, IT penetration into energy infrastructures turns them into 'smart grids'. This makes previously disconnected infrastructures interdependent in their day-to-day operations, and it requires alignment of the asset management processes and activities. Complicating this alignment, however, are greatly different time constants for innovations. This alignment and its impact on overall system performance, downtime and cost can be analysed by using Agent Based and System Dynamic models.

Students and advisors will be notified of acceptance by May 25, 2010. The abstracts will be reviewed by a panel to seek diversity of research topic and representation of different areas of interest to CIE.

CIE Student Travel Grants and Stipends

The CAPPD committee of the ASME Computers and Information in Engineering (CIE) division and the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) are offering a number of travel grants and stipends to support graduate student attendance at the 2010 CIE conference in Montreal to present a poster on their research. Five travel grants each in the amount of $1000 will be awarded by NIST to cover the awardees cost of travel to and accommodation at the conference. Students pursuing doctoral research will be given priority for these grants. Four smaller stipends of $250 are also available to help offset the increasing costs for attending the conference. These are open to any graduate student. Poster submissions reflecting relevant and high quality research work will be favored in the awarding process.

To apply for these awards interested students should submit the following:

    * A written statement explaining how the applicant's research is relevant to any of the technical areas within the CIE division and how attending the conference will benefit the applicant's on-going research and career goals.

    * A travel budget clearly showing estimated expenses, other sources of funding for the trip and how the grant/stipend bridges the shortfall between the two.

    * A letter from the student's research advisor confirming the student's eligibility, other sources of funding for travel to the conference and supporting the application.

This application must be submitted together with the abstract and other information as requested in the call for posters electronically to the poster session organizer (cwang@mae.cuhk.edu.hk) by the abstract submission deadline. To be eligible for a grant or stipend interested students must be attending a university or college in the United States during the 2010 CIE conference and be a registered student member of ASME. NIST grant recipients must be US citizens.

Applications will be evaluated based on the quality of the research abstract and the written statement submitted. Successful applicants will be informed of the committee's decision by May 25, 2010. Travel grants will be disbursed through travel arrangements made by NIST's travel office on behalf of the awardee. Stipends will be presented at the CAPPD committee meeting at the conference. Awardees of both the grants and stipends are required to attend this meeting as a condition of the award.

Accepted and presented papers will be included in the conference proceedings published by Springer in the serie called "IFIP Advances in Information and Communication Technology" (IFIP AICT). Selected papers will be considered for development into journal papers for a special issue in Production Planning and Control.

Special Session Scope

Nowadays, the distinction which links goods to something tangible and services to something intangible is vanishing. Many service outputs rely also on substantial material components and, conversely, many "products" have embedded intangible attributes.

In this context, the Product-Service System (PSS) concept finds its root. The basic idea behind this concept is that it ensues from an innovation strategy, shifting the business focus from the design and sales of physical products to the design and sales of a system. Its aim is to generate profits not only at the point of sale but also throughout the whole life cycle. Moreover, PSS is not only a commercially driven business concept: PSS has a strong link with sustainability, supporting industries to expand their traditional economic focus to embrace environmental and social dimensions.

The success of a PSS along all its life cycle phases critically depends on its conceptualisation and design, even if this notion has been largely neglected for a long time. It is only recently that a fundamental change in this situation has become evident, coinciding with the increasing practical relevance of the topic, as numerous publications in the last few years have confirmed. In particular, Service Engineering has been prevailing as a technical discipline dealing with the systematic development and design of a product-service system by using an appropriate set of models, methods and tools.

Therefore, Service Engineering is concerned with service-related questions of general R&D management.

Even if this topic is still mainly theoretical, in the last few years industrial applications have been reported in literature, in order to answer to the growing industrial requests.

Papers offering novel research contributions in any aspect of previous topics are solicited. The focus is on high-quality original unpublished research, case studies, and implementation experiences.

Contributions may concern empirical studies on the following suggested topics :

·         Service engineering models, methodologies, methods and tools

·         Product-Service design and development

·         Qualitative and quantitative design tools for product-service innovation

·         Design of future smart product service systems

·         Closed-loop life cycle designs for product service systems

·         Industrial case studies on the topics of the Special Session
