APMS 2010 - International Conference

11-13 October 2010 - Cernobbio, Como, Italy

Special Session on

Product Service System Engineering

Theoretical and Empirical Evidences

Co-chairs of the Session:

·         Giuditta Pezzotta – University of Bergamo (giuditta.pezzotta@unibg.it)

·         Sergio Terzi - University of Bergamo (sergio.terzi@unibg.it)

·         Carlo Vezzoli – Politecnico di Milano (carlo.vezzoli@polimi.it)

You are cordially invited to participate to the special session on "Product Service System Engineering – Theoretical and Empirical Evidences" in the International Conference on Advances in Production Management Systems (APMS). Since several decades, APMS is one of the major events and the official conference of the IFIP Working Group 5.7 on Advances in Production Management Sytems.

APMS 2010 will take place in Cernobbio (Como Lake, Italy), 11-13 October 2010.

Papers will be blind peer-reviewed. Accepted and presented papers will be included in the conference proceedings published by Springer in the serie called "IFIP Advances in Information and Communication Technology" (IFIP AICT). Selected papers will be considered for development into journal papers for a special issue in Production Planning and Control.

Special Session Scope

Nowadays, the distinction which links goods to something tangible and services to something intangible is vanishing. Many service outputs rely also on substantial material components and, conversely, many "products" have embedded intangible attributes.

In this context, the Product-Service System (PSS) concept finds its root. The basic idea behind this concept is that it ensues from an innovation strategy, shifting the business focus from the design and sales of physical products to the design and sales of a system. Its aim is to generate profits not only at the point of sale but also throughout the whole life cycle. Moreover, PSS is not only a commercially driven business concept: PSS has a strong link with sustainability, supporting industries to expand their traditional economic focus to embrace environmental and social dimensions.

The success of a PSS along all its life cycle phases critically depends on its conceptualisation and design, even if this notion has been largely neglected for a long time. It is only recently that a fundamental change in this situation has become evident, coinciding with the increasing practical relevance of the topic, as numerous publications in the last few years have confirmed. In particular, Service Engineering has been prevailing as a technical discipline dealing with the systematic development and design of a product-service system by using an appropriate set of models, methods and tools.

Therefore, Service Engineering is concerned with service-related questions of general R&D management.

Even if this topic is still mainly theoretical, in the last few years industrial applications have been reported in literature, in order to answer to the growing industrial requests.

Papers offering novel research contributions in any aspect of previous topics are solicited. The focus is on high-quality original unpublished research, case studies, and implementation experiences.

Contributions may concern empirical studies on the following suggested topics :

·         Service engineering models, methodologies, methods and tools

·         Product-Service design and development

·         Qualitative and quantitative design tools for product-service innovation

·         Design of future smart product service systems

·         Closed-loop life cycle designs for product service systems

·         Industrial case studies on the topics of the Special Session

Paper Submission and Key Dates

Authors are invited to submit an extended abstracts by April 25th, 2010.

Extended abstracts must be in English, describes original work, at least 2000 word long and must be submitted in .doc format. No format is provided for extended abstract submission.

In order to guarantee a proper review, authors should not be mentioned in the text. Submissions not fulfilling these requirements will be automatically rejected. Papers will be reviewed by at least three referees. Following the acceptance of the extended abstracts (15 May 2010), authors will be invited to submit a Full Paper.

Detailed instructions for the submission of Full Papers will be sent to the corresponding author.

Please consider that at least one author per paper must register to the conference by July 1st, 2010. If none of the authors is registered, the paper will not be included in the conference programme and in the proceedings

Papers can be submitted using the on line system available here: https://www.conftool.net/apms2010/
